In Genesis 1 and 2, God creates humans, they are good, and they have no shame. In Genesis 3, the serpent uses crafty and subtle lies to introduce the feeling of shame into humanity - the felt perception of their own inadaquacy. Shame can be good when we realize we are limited, but it can also become toxic when we believe that because we are limited, we are worthless. Toxic shame lies beneath every sin and leads to slavery to self.
The truth is, the belief that you’re worthless is a barrier to real freedom.
When we find ourselves in the place of shame, we have to make a decision. Whose voice do we listen to? The serpent's? Or the Creator's?
