Sometimes in the Church, we teach people to have a shallow relationship with the Bible through teachings that are full of self help messages and inspirational stories about life with a flavor of religion. Many times the Bible is referenced, but the main point of the message is not the main point of the Bible passage that is referenced. It is taken out of context and used to prove the speaker’s point, rather than being the speaker’s point. The result is that only 6% of Americans hold to and live from a Biblical worldview.
At Harvest Mill, we fully believe in the authority and sufficiency of the Bible. If the speaker has not made his main point from the Scripture passage, He hasn’t honored God. Most of the year, the Sunday sermons come from walking through whole books of the Bible, rather than topical preaching. We work hard to make sure people understand the Scripture in it’s original context. We also practice this together in Wednesday night Bible Study, where we talk about the passage from the most recent Sunday sermon. Our kids are also taught Scripture in an age appropriate way through a curriculum from Lifeway called the Gospel Project for Kids, in which they walk through the whole Bible in 3 years. (Matthew 7:28, 1 Corinthians 14:26, 2 Timothy 4:2, 2 John 1:9)
